Typically, yes—unless you live in an area with frequent hailstorms. Many appraisers travel to storm-affected locations during hail season to maximize their earning potential.
Most appraisers work full-time (or more) during hail season and either take the winter off or work in other areas of the auto industry until the next season begins.
Independent appraisers and adjusters are typically paid per day worked, per vehicle inspected, or a combination of both. The current industry day rate for fully trained appraisers is around $600–$700 per day.
As an independent appraiser, you’ll be a 1099 subcontractor with the flexibility to work for multiple companies handling claims for insurance carriers. You can apply to be on company rosters to increase your availability for work.
